Perfect material for flooring

Kitchen is a place where we spend a lot of time. Stains aren’t an unlikely event. This is why the kitchen floor should be made of durable material that is at the same time easy to keep clean. Which one should you choose? We are presenting our suggestions below.

What is the best material for a kitchen floor?

Ceramic and stoneware tiles – are available in a wide range of colours. They are resistant to wear, their water absorption is low, and they are not stained easily. Besides, they are very robust and it is easy to keep them clean. Their perfectly smooth surface makes it difficult for the dirt to adhere, and it is also very easy to clean it off.

Terracotta and clinker – both materials look great on the floor but they are significantly less robust than ceramic tiles. They are quite susceptible to cracks and other damage. Despite these disadvantages, they are suitable for a practical, functional and easy to clean floor. Unfortunately they are quite cold, so underfloor heating is recommended.

Stone or conglomerate – stone is a very good choice because it is universal and timeless. Granite is best for flooring, because it is the hardest and most robust of all available stones. Other stones such as slate, limestone, sandstone or travertine can also be used, but they have to be impregnated prior to installation. Such treatment will prolong their durability and will make them resistant to stains and moisture. They will also wear off much slower. They are expensive, but they look really luxurious and elegant. An alternative solution are products made of granite-quartz conglomerate. They are robust and easy to clean and allow for creating a uniform surface with almost invisible welds. Unfortunately, stone floor is cold, so we recommend underfloor heating.

Wood – it might seem that wood is not suitable for kitchen floors. Nothing further from the truth! It will work best in an interior with traditional or rustic décor. It is “warm” and cushions falls effectively. It is best to use hard types of wood. Oak, beech, maple, sycamore, badi, merbau, doussie, and Brazilian cherry. The wood should be free of knots and discolorations, because only then it will be durable and easy to clean. The wood should be impregnated, because such treatment will make it resistant to wear, water and stains. One of the biggest advantages of wooden floor is that it can be renovated. First, impregnation agent has the be removed. Then the floor has to be polished and in the end it is covered with preservative agent again. Such treatments make wooden floor look perfect for many years.

kitchen sink

Kitchen sink – how to choose

How to choose the right kitchen sink?

Are you arranging your kitchen? You can’t forget about the sink! There are lots of them to choose from, so you will definitely find something that will suit your needs and the size of your kitchen. The main issues you should consider before buying the sink are discussed in this article.

  1. Number of basins

Sinks may have different number of basins. Many companies produce sinks with: single basin, one and a half basin, two basins and two and a half basins. The first type is a perfect option for singles or people who do not have a lot of work space on their worktop. Alternatively, there are also sinks with one and a half basin. The smaller basin is perfect for washing cutlery or fruits and vegetables. Sink with two or two and a half basins will work best in kitchens where there is no dishwasher and all the dishes have to be hand washed. They are a convenient, functional and cost-efficient solution because the dishes can be washed in one basin and rinsed with water in the second. They are especially recommended for big families with children.

  1. Mounting options

Another important aspect that should be considered before purchasing the sink are mounting options. Sinks can be divided by mounting options into three categories: top-mount sinks, drop-in sinks and undermount sinks. The first one requires a cupboard without worktop. Of course, it has to have appropriate width. It is a perfect option if fast and easy mounting is what you are after, and if your kitchen is small. The second type, the drop-in sink is undoubtedly the most popular one. The top part creates an almost even surface with your worktop, so it is aesthetically appealing. Prior to installation, you have to cut a hole of adequate size in your worktop where the sink will be installed. Undermount sinks also require a hole in the countertop, but they are installed from below. They look really well with countertops made of stone.

  1. Shape

Sinks available in stores have different shapes: round, oval, rectangular or square; there are also corner sinks, trapezoidal sinks and L-shaped sinks. Your choice should be determined by the arrangement of cabinets and cupboards, size and design of the kitchen and your own preferences. Remember however, that it is much easier and convenient to use large square or rectangular sinks.

  1. Material

The last thing we would like to mention is material. The sink can be made of stainless steel, enameled steel, plastics, synthetic granite and ceramics. The unquestionable advantage of stainless steel sinks is the fact that they are easy to clean, inexpensive, and resistant to high temperatures as well as to rapid temperature changes. Enameled steel sinks are also easy to clean and the streaks are almost invisible on their surface, but they are much more prone to mechanical damage such as chipping and scratches. They also turn matt much faster compared to other products. Sinks made of plastics are very resistant to mechanical damage but they do not handle high temperatures well. The most durable are of course granite sinks. Ceramic sinks are also fine, but once the enamel wears off, the sink doesn’t appear nice anymore.

extractor hood

Buying an extractor hood

Buying an extractor hood – short guide

Do you want to get rid of cooking smells in your kitchen? Mount a ventilation hood over your cooker and it will get rid of the problem. there is lots of them available in stores and they come in all colours, shapes, sizes and are equipped with different functions. Below we are describing issues you should consider before buying a hood.

  1. Type of extractor hood.

There are four main types of extractor hoods available in stores: canopy cooker hoods, chimney hoods, kitchen island hoods and integrated kitchen hoods (telescopic). The first type is an ideal solution for small and tightly packed kitchens. Canopy cooker hoods are independent units and their price is very attractive. They can be hanged right under the cupboard or mounted on the wall. Chimney hoods (backed onto a wall) are just as much popular as canopy cooker hoods. They are mounted right over the cooker/gas hob and they extract smells into the ventilation shaft. The vertical chimney hides discharge pipe. Usually chimney hoods have simple and geometrical shapes and steel finish. Island hoods are quite similar, but they are attached to the ceiling, not to the wall. They are the most expensive of all extractors available on the market. They are big and have a stylish modern design. They are installed right over the kitchen island. The last type of kitchen extractors, the telescopic hoods are fitted between existing kitchen units on the wall. They have a a big extracting surface and blend perfectly with the rest of the kitchen – the whole mechanism is hidden in the cupboard. They are equipped with a “movable” drawer and their performance is much better compared to canopy cooker hoods.

  1. Type of filter.

There are four types of filters used in extractor hoods: grease filters, metal filters, carbon filters and fleece filters. Grease filters are supposed to stop grease particles occurring in water vapor and protect the engine together with interior housing from pollution. Metal filters have the same purpose, but their construction is different. They consist of a dense mesh, which captures the grease. Their main characteristics are long service life and durability. Moreover, these filters can be washed. Carbon filters absorb smells and filter the air before it returns to the kitchen. Fleece filters absorb grease and pollution. They are made of nonwoven fabric, which wears down very fast, so they have to be exchanged quite often.

  1. Efficiency.

Efficiency is expressed in m3/h. This value lets you know how much air the device filters in 60 minutes. It’s best to choose an extractor that is capable of circulating kitchen air 6 times in an hour. Of course in case of open kitchens, this parameter should be even higher.
