Kitchen sink – how to choose

How to choose the right kitchen sink?

Are you arranging your kitchen? You can’t forget about the sink! There are lots of them to choose from, so you will definitely find something that will suit your needs and the size of your kitchen. The main issues you should consider before buying the sink are discussed in this article.

  1. Number of basins

Sinks may have different number of basins. Many companies produce sinks with: single basin, one and a half basin, two basins and two and a half basins. The first type is a perfect option for singles or people who do not have a lot of work space on their worktop. Alternatively, there are also sinks with one and a half basin. The smaller basin is perfect for washing cutlery or fruits and vegetables. Sink with two or two and a half basins will work best in kitchens where there is no dishwasher and all the dishes have to be hand washed. They are a convenient, functional and cost-efficient solution because the dishes can be washed in one basin and rinsed with water in the second. They are especially recommended for big families with children.

  1. Mounting options

Another important aspect that should be considered before purchasing the sink are mounting options. Sinks can be divided by mounting options into three categories: top-mount sinks, drop-in sinks and undermount sinks. The first one requires a cupboard without worktop. Of course, it has to have appropriate width. It is a perfect option if fast and easy mounting is what you are after, and if your kitchen is small. The second type, the drop-in sink is undoubtedly the most popular one. The top part creates an almost even surface with your worktop, so it is aesthetically appealing. Prior to installation, you have to cut a hole of adequate size in your worktop where the sink will be installed. Undermount sinks also require a hole in the countertop, but they are installed from below. They look really well with countertops made of stone.

  1. Shape

Sinks available in stores have different shapes: round, oval, rectangular or square; there are also corner sinks, trapezoidal sinks and L-shaped sinks. Your choice should be determined by the arrangement of cabinets and cupboards, size and design of the kitchen and your own preferences. Remember however, that it is much easier and convenient to use large square or rectangular sinks.

  1. Material

The last thing we would like to mention is material. The sink can be made of stainless steel, enameled steel, plastics, synthetic granite and ceramics. The unquestionable advantage of stainless steel sinks is the fact that they are easy to clean, inexpensive, and resistant to high temperatures as well as to rapid temperature changes. Enameled steel sinks are also easy to clean and the streaks are almost invisible on their surface, but they are much more prone to mechanical damage such as chipping and scratches. They also turn matt much faster compared to other products. Sinks made of plastics are very resistant to mechanical damage but they do not handle high temperatures well. The most durable are of course granite sinks. Ceramic sinks are also fine, but once the enamel wears off, the sink doesn’t appear nice anymore.
